Joshua 19:43

And Elon, and Thimnathah, and Ekron,

The towns named are part of the inheritance assigned when Joshua divided the land among the tribes of the children of Israel after he had led them through the Jordan. That division set them in a fair way to conquer all their foes and to enter the promised rest. The book recording it was largely written by Israel's leader Joshua himself. His name means saviour, and he was one of the two men of his generation who wholly followed the Lord through the forty years of temptation and wilderness. He entered upon his greatest work when about eighty years of age, and the Captain of Jehovah's hosts was with him in all his work of victory.

Israel might soon have possessed the land had they been faithful. From the triumph at Jericho, where the invisible army of God leveled the walls of the first-fruit of that evil land, there was general backsliding. Whenever Israel failed to trust they were defeated, as at Ai, so they lived in adversity years they might have lived in prosperity. Lot in this division means the part, division, or fate which falls to one by divine determination, for the land was to be divided by lot. What human speech calls chance, hazard, or fortune is in strictness the determination of providence. As a verb, to lot means to allot, to assign, to distribute, to sort, to catalogue, and to portion.
