The dividing of the land by its boundaries to the tribes was brought to an end before Joshua received his own inheritance among Israel. A special inheritance had been promised to him, yet he asked for only a single city. He held back his own claim until even the humblest of the people had been served. The inheritance given to him was the city of Timnath-serah. The name of that city means the portion that remains, or that which is left over. His contentment to take only what remained stands as testimony to his unselfish character.
