Joshua 20:8

And on the other side Jordan by Jericho eastward, they assigned Bezer in the wilderness upon the plain out of the tribe of Reuben, and Ramoth in Gilead out of the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan out of the tribe of Manasseh.

Ramoth in Gilead, also called Ramoth-gilead, was one of the old cities of refuge located east of the Jordan. It lay within the territory of Gad. In the time of Ahab and Jehoshaphat it was held by the Syrians, while Ahab maintained that it rightfully belonged to Israel and hoped to regain it from them. Jehoshaphat, against his better judgment, was persuaded to unite with Ahab in attempting to retake it from the Syrians by force of arms.

The way to a city of refuge was clearly defined, with the road plainly marked for those journeying to safety. That clearness illustrates how clearly God has erected a signpost for those journeying through this world, with one arm pointing out willing obedience to the Creator as the road to happiness and life and the other indicating disobedience as the path to misery and death.
