Joshua 20:9

These were the cities appointed for all the children of Israel, and for the stranger that sojourneth among them, that whosoever killeth any person at unawares might flee thither, and not die by the hand of the avenger of blood, until he stood before the congregation.

Under the Jewish dispensation the way to the appointed cities of refuge set forth in Joshua 20:1-9 was clearly defined. The road was made so plain that anyone fleeing for life could find it without perplexity or delay. With that same clearness willing obedience to the Creator is marked out as the road to happiness and life. Disobedience is marked out with equal plainness as the path to misery and death.
