Joshua 21:12

But the fields of the city, and the villages thereof, gave they to Caleb the son of Jephunneh for his possession.

The grant recorded here belongs to the settlement in which the Levites were given cities dispersed among all the tribes of Israel rather than a separate tribal territory of their own. That scattering fulfilled the ancient pronouncement that Levi would be divided and dispersed in Israel. Yet Levi's steadfast fidelity to God secured for the tribe the sacred service of the sanctuary and priesthood. By that appointment the very scattering once spoken as a curse was transformed into a blessing to the whole nation.
