The allotment left Levi without a tribal territory of its own, providing instead forty-eight cities scattered throughout Israel. That scattering placed Levitical households and ministry within the bounds of the other tribes rather than in a separate inheritance. Within that arrangement this verse names particular cities assigned to the Levites, including Ain, Juttah, and Beth-shemesh, each together with its surrounding villages or suburbs.
