At Shiloh in the land of Canaan the Levites came forward to make their request for their appointed inheritance. They asked for cities to live in, together with the surrounding pasturelands for their cattle, exactly as the Lord had commanded through Moses. The plea was therefore not for favor but for fulfillment of a divine command already given for their provision. Their inheritance was consequently made up of towns scattered throughout Israel rather than one continuous territory of their own.
