Joshua 21:20

And the families of the children of Kohath, the Levites which remained of the children of Kohath, even they had the cities of their lot out of the tribe of Ephraim.

The families of Kohath that remained among the Levites received the cities of their lot out of Ephraim, rather than receiving a separate tribal territory for themselves. Their allotment from Ephraim belonged to Levi's scattered inheritance of forty-eight cities distributed throughout the land. Levi had been appointed to no concentrated inheritance but to cities dispersed among the other tribes. Because of Levi's fidelity to God, the tribe was also entrusted with sacred service in the sanctuary, and in this way the curse of scattering was turned into a blessing.
