Joshua 21:23

And out of the tribe of Dan, Eltekeh with her suburbs, Gibbethon with her suburbs,

The verse stands in the record of the distribution of the land, a division carried out from written documents that described property holdings with accuracy. It assigns from the tribe of Dan two towns with their surrounding pasture lands, Eltekeh with her suburbs and Gibbethon with her suburbs. In that connection it forms part of the list of the Levitical cities, illustrating how the forty-eight cities of the Levites were scattered throughout Israel so that religious workers dwelt close among the people they were to serve.

It belongs to the account of the completion of the conquest and division of the land of Canaan, entered in the margin as B.C. 1444. That division opens the 450 years of rule under the judges declared in Acts 13:19-21, a period closing with the anointing of Saul as king, dated B.C. 1095. Subtracting 1095 from 1444 yields only 349 years rather than 450, showing Ussher's chronology to fall about a century short. By that reckoning Creation is placed about a century too late, so that earth's 6,000 years are well-nigh run.
