Ramoth in Gilead and Mahanaim, together with their surrounding suburbs, were taken out of the tribe of Gad and allotted to the Levites. This allotment belonged to the larger arrangement by which Levi received no separate tribal territory of its own. Instead the Levites were given forty-eight cities scattered throughout the land.
