Joshua 22:7

Now to the one half of the tribe of Manasseh Moses had given possession in Bashan: but unto the other half thereof gave Joshua among their brethren on this side Jordan westward. And when Joshua sent them away also unto their tents, then he blessed them,

The verse records the dismissal with blessing of the eastern tribes to their tents beyond the Jordan. It distinguishes the one half of Manasseh to whom Moses had given possession in Bashan from the other half to whom Joshua gave possession west of the Jordan among their brethren.

Gad, Reuben, and half Manasseh had chosen the lands of Gilead and Bashan before crossing the Jordan. As a pastoral people they wanted its wide plains and rich forests as extensive grazing for their flocks and herds.

Those tribes had pledged to cross over with armed men to share the battles with their brethren until Canaan was possessed. They faithfully fought alongside them for years, with forty thousand passing over to the plains of Jericho.

Having shared the conflicts they shared the spoils. They returned with much riches, cattle, silver, gold, brass, iron, and clothing to divide with those who had remained with the families and flocks.

Joshua sent them away with an anxious heart. Dwelling at a distance from the sanctuary in isolated life brought strong temptation to fall into the customs of the bordering heathen tribes.
