Joshua 22:8

And he spake unto them, saying, Return with much riches unto your tents, and with very much cattle, with silver, and with gold, and with brass, and with iron, and with very much raiment: divide the spoil of your enemies with your brethren.

The verse records the dismissal of Gad and Reuben and the half-tribe of Manasseh to their own possession on the east side of the Jordan after years of brave fighting alongside their brethren in Canaan. As a pastoral people they had already received their inheritance in the upland plains and the rich forests of Gilead and Bashan, yet they had remained to unite with their brethren in the conflicts for the land west of the river. Because of that faithful union in battle they were permitted to share fully in the spoils of victory.

They were sent back to their tents laden with great wealth, with very much cattle, with silver and gold, with brass and iron, and with very much clothing. That abundance was not for the returning warriors alone, for they were charged to divide the spoil of their enemies with their brethren who had remained behind to guard the families and the flocks. Their homecoming at a distance from the sanctuary nevertheless awakened anxious foreboding, for an isolated and wandering life beside heathen tribes would strongly tempt them to drift into heathen customs.
