Joshua 6:25
And Joshua saved Rahab the harlot alive, and her father’s household, and all that she had; and she dwelleth in Israel even unto this day; because she hid the messengers, which Joshua sent to spy out Jericho. And Joshua saved Rahab the harlot alive, and her father’s household, and all that she had; and she dwelleth in Israel even unto this day; because she hid the messengers, which Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.
Joshua 6:25 belongs to the account of the conquest, fall and overthrow of Jericho, which was one of the works Israel set out from Gilgal to accomplish. Jericho was a stronghold devoted to the most extravagant idolatry, whose very wealthy inhabitants credited all their riches of gold and silver to their gods. They were corrupt and blasphemous like the people before the Flood, and by wicked works insulted and provoked the God of heaven until His judgments were awakened against the city. For this He put Jericho under a curse that all in it would perish except Rahab and her household.
The taking of Jericho was directed by God, and the work was arranged so that the victory came through His help rather than worldly military skill or human wisdom. No human agent could claim credit for it, but He was to receive the glory for the victory. The Captain of the Lord's host came Himself from heaven to lead the armies of heaven in the attack, and angels laid hold of the massive walls and brought them to the ground.
Rahab, her father's household, and all that she had were saved alive when Jericho was destroyed, because she hid the messengers sent to spy out Jericho and showed favor to them. Their rescue fulfilled the spies' promise to her, and she is described as faithful. Rahab the Canaanite and harlot is thus an example of one who turned from idolatry to worship the true God and united with God's chosen people, dwelling in Israel. The conquest teaches that faith in God and obedience to His commands are essential in spiritual conflict.
