Joshua 8:10

And Joshua rose up early in the morning, and numbered the people, and went up, he and the elders of Israel, before the people to Ai.

Joshua rose up early in the morning and numbered the people, then went up toward Ai with the elders of Israel marching before the people. This was Israel’s second advance against Ai, made after Achan’s punishment, when the execution of the divine sentence had turned God’s wrath away from Israel. For this advance Joshua marshaled all the men of war in obedience to God’s command to go up against Ai again. The advance was a march out from Gilgal, Israel’s first encampment in the promised land and the same base from which Israel had marched to overthrow Jericho. With God’s power present and the armies of heaven fighting for Israel, Israel put its enemies to flight and soon took the city.
