Joshua 8:13

And when they had set the people, even all the host that was on the north of the city, and their liers in wait on the west of the city, Joshua went that night into the midst of the valley.

Joshua 8:13 belongs to the account of Israel's conquest of Ai, which followed the overthrow of Jericho. It describes part of Israel's march out from Gilgal to conquer Ai. More particularly, it concerns Israel's renewed attack on Ai after Achan's punishment, when Joshua marshaled the fighting men, even all the men of war, to go up again against the city.

Achan's punishment had turned the wrath of God away from Israel, opening the way for this second advance. Joshua's renewed advance against Ai was made in obedience to God's command. Israel soon took the city with God's help, for the armies of heaven fought for Israel so that its enemies were put to flight.
