Joshua 8:16
And all the people that were in Ai were called together to pursue after them: and they pursued after Joshua, and were drawn away from the city. And all the people that were in Ai were called together to pursue after them: and they pursued after Joshua, and were drawn away from the city.
The verse pictures the whole population of Ai joining in pursuit of Joshua until they were lured entirely clear of their city. It belongs to Israel's renewed second attack on Ai, undertaken only after Achan had been punished and his sentence executed. By that time the wrath of God against Israel had been turned away. The conquest followed the march of the people outward from Gilgal.
That renewed advance was made by the express command of God and employed all the men of war. The victory came because God's power was with His people, with the armies of heaven fighting for Israel until their enemies were put to flight. Having thus drawn the people of Ai away from the city, Joshua's army defeated them in the overthrow described in Joshua 8:1-29, and Israel soon took possession of the city itself. That triumph remained one of the memorable events associated with Gilgal.
