The verse belongs to the conquest of Ai that began when Israel marched out from Gilgal to overthrow the city. It describes Israel's second advance against Ai after Achan's punishment carried out the divine sentence and turned God's wrath away from Israel. For this renewed attack Joshua was commanded to marshal all the men of war and go again against Ai.
As soon as Joshua stretched out his hand as the signal, the ambush rose quickly from its place, ran into the city, took it, and hastened to set it on fire. With God's power present and the armies of heaven fighting for Israel, its enemies were put to flight and Israel was soon in possession of Ai.
