That renewed attack came by God's command after Achan's sin had been judged and his sentence carried out. Israel marched to conquer the city from the plain at Gilgal. The verse describes the moment when Israel's forces closed in on Ai's army from both sides and struck them so that none remained or escaped, putting the enemy to flight. Israel soon took possession of the city, with God's power present with the people and the armies of Heaven fighting for them.
