Joshua 9:4
They did work wilily, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks upon their asses, and wine bottles, old, and rent, and bound up; They did work wilily, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks upon their asses, and wine bottles, old, and rent, and bound up;
The Gibeonites were a numerous people living in Canaan. They acted cunningly to appear as ambassadors from a distant country, carrying old, torn wineskins and worn provisions as evidence of a long journey. Their deceptive treaty was made without Israel asking God for counsel. That neglect in making the treaty brought punishment on Israel. The Gibeonites renounced their heathenism and united with Israel, sharing in the blessings of God's covenant.
