Jude 1:18

How that they told you there should be mockers in the last time, who should walk after their own ungodly lusts.

Jude repeats what the apostles of the Lord Jesus Christ had told beforehand, that in the last time mockers walking after their own ungodly lusts would come, and he writes to those sanctified and preserved and called to exhort them with all diligence to earnestly contend for the faith once delivered to the saints. The mockers are scoffers who live to gratify their own sinful desires and mock what is right, a class found in every city and exactly as manifested in the present period of earth's history. Their word is to be remembered as describing apostasy to be met in the present day, for they are now present, separating themselves, sensual, having not the Spirit, including those within the church who become self-sufficient and depart from the faith. As in the days before the Flood, many reject warning and pursue sinful pleasure to excess until the mind is shut against eternal life, while false teachers with a form of godliness arise to divert minds from the very truth that defines the position that can be occupied with safety. Believers are therefore to beware corrupting worldly ways and study Scripture earnestly, building themselves on their most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, keeping themselves in the love of God, and saving others with fear while hating even the garment spotted by the flesh.

Words and Original Setting

The verse repeats what was told beforehand by the apostles of the Lord Jesus Christ, that in the last time there should be mockers walking after their own ungodly lusts. These mockers are false teachers who lack the Spirit and turn people from the truth, sensual separators from whom the Spirit of the Lord has departed. Their word is to be remembered as describing an apostasy to be met, for the mockers are now present and history in this corrupt state of ungodliness is repeated.

It belongs to the letter of Jude, servant of Jesus Christ and brother of James, to those sanctified by God the Father and preserved in Jesus Christ and called, with mercy and peace and love multiplied. In it, while writing with all diligence of the common salvation, he exhorts believers to earnestly contend for the faith once delivered to the saints and to be consistent in their profession of faith. To contend for that faith means to bring men back from transgression of the commandments of God, since sin is the transgression of the law. It means to proclaim the gospel of Christ with earnestness and zeal as light to commandment-breakers, to arouse men and women to prepare to meet God, and to raise the standard of that delivered truth and magnify the law and make it honorable while the law is trampled underfoot by the disloyal.

The verse exposes the character of ungodly men in the last time as scoffers living to gratify their own sinful desires and mocking what is right. It portrays their evil works exactly as manifested in the present period of earth's history, describing a class found in every city. It stands just before a turn from exposure of the ungodly to encouragement for God's faithful people, calling for heed to its teaching, recognition of such conduct, and guarding against the corrupting influence of worldly ways.

Fulfillment in Last Days

The apostles' foretelling is to be remembered as describing the apostasy to be met in the present day, for the mockers are now present and the description of conditions is fulfilled in our day. They are those who separate themselves, sensual, having not the Spirit, and the Spirit of the Lord has departed from them. This includes people within the church who become self-sufficient, reject the Lord's counsel and reproof, follow human judgment, and depart from the faith.

The verse describes the present world as it approaches the close of earth's history and the approach of Christ's coming and judgment. Like the people before the Flood, many reject warnings, pursue sinful pleasures, and resist correction, while within the church false teachings are excused and people lose discernment. Lawful business and appetite are carried to excess in eating and drinking and indulgence until the whole being is perverted and the mind is shut against eternal life. That corrupt state of ungodliness existed before and history will be repeated.

The verse was given through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit as a lifted danger signal to make the perils of the last time understood. Its message guards believers against the seductive influences of false teachers who have a form of godliness but are not safe leaders. In these last days they arise and become actively zealous, presenting all kinds of theories to divert minds from the very truth that defines the position that can be occupied with safety. They work in a time when Satan is working with power upon religionists, leading them to make a pretense of being righteous while failing to place themselves under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and these mockers are among false teachers who lack the Spirit and turn people from the truth.

The verse is fulfilled when religious teachers discredit study of Christ's second coming and the prophecies, thereby weakening faith in God's Word and in Scripture. Many then use this as license to live by ungodly desires, following mockery and self-indulgence as marks of the last time. It applies to those who ridiculed the Advent message and its messengers. Those teachers then blamed Adventists for the resulting evil.

Warning and Faithful Response

The apostles had warned beforehand that mockers would appear in the last time, living to gratify their own ungodly desires. That warning is to be heeded as Jude's teaching, calling believers to recognize conduct that mocks what is right. It applies within the church, where people become self-sufficient, reject the Lord's counsel and reproof, and follow human judgment, and their course fulfills the apostles' prediction. Against that corrupting influence of worldly ways, found as a class in every city, believers are to beware and to study Scripture earnestly and hold to God's word.

That corrupt state of ungodliness existed before, and history will be repeated. In the face of it, those who claim great light and spiritual knowledge must not speak boastful words with a masterful human spirit. Instead they must build themselves up on their most holy faith, pray in the Holy Ghost, keep themselves in the love of God, and look for the mercy of the Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. They must keep their garments undefiled, have compassion on some with discernment, and save others with fear, pulling them out of the fire while hating even the garment spotted by the flesh.
