Jude 1:8

Likewise also these filthy dreamers defile the flesh, despise dominion, and speak evil of dignities.

Jude's warning is addressed to those sanctified by God the Father and preserved in Jesus Christ and called, with mercy and peace and love multiplied, urging them to earnestly contend for the faith once delivered to the saints. That contending means bringing people back from transgression of the commandments of God, proclaiming the gospel with earnestness and zeal as light upon commandment-breakers to arouse men and women to prepare to meet God, and raising the standard of truth because sin is transgression of the law that is being trampled by the disloyal, whom God calls His people to magnify the law and make it honorable. The verse gives part of the description of the pollution of the world and Satan's working agencies and efforts to corrupt it.

It describes corrupt people and false teachers by three traits: they defile the flesh or body, despise or reject rightful authority and dominion, and speak abusively or evil against those in positions of dignity, honor, and responsibility. It foretells an apostasy to be met in the present day and in the last days, with such corrupt people to be recognized in every city. At that time they become actively zealous.

They follow their own lusts and persist in an evil course despite definite reproof and warning. They appear religious and have a form of godliness but are not safe leaders, and their seductive influence draws believers away from the Holy Spirit, presenting all kinds of theories to divert minds from the very truth that defines the position that can be occupied with safety, at a time when Satan works with power upon religious people to lead them to make a pretense of being righteous while failing to place themselves under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Such people may seek entry into the churches and deceive even the elect, so the faithful are to remain separate from them unless they are converted and show a changed testimony. Workers must study this warning in order to recognize and meet these conditions, guarding believers against that influence. Their example supports keeping sanitariums away from ungodly city influences while still working to save people there, and the surrounding example of Michael refusing to make a railing accusation teaches Christ's followers not to answer opposition with retaliation or defiance.
