Judges 1:11

Judges 1:11 stands in the introduction to Judges in chapters 1, 2 and 3:1-6, the opening chapters of the book. It records the advance against the inhabitants of Debir, whose name before was Kirjath-sepher. Its setting shows that Israel had not possessed all the country.

Its setting deals with Israel's failure to carry out the instructions God gave, their consequent captivity, and the help that came through the judges, or saviours, whom the Lord raised up for them. Its setting marks Israel's new period of freedom after oppression, in which the people could choose obedience and build their national life well, or choose self-will and squander their freedom and opportunity.
