Judges 1:17

And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they slew the Canaanites that inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. And the name of the city was called Hormah.

Judges 1:17 stands in the opening of Judges, which begins a new period in Israel's history after the people had been freed from oppression. That opening account shows that Israel had not yet possessed all the land. Those opening chapters show Israel's failure to carry out the instructions God gave, their consequent captivity, and the help that came to them through the judges, or saviours, whom the Lord raised up in their behalf. The verse records the later fulfillment, after Israel entered Canaan under Joshua, of the Israelites' vow to destroy the people and cities of Arad.
