Judges 1:26

And the man went into the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called the name thereof Luz: which is the name thereof unto this day.

Judges 1:26 belongs to the opening account and history of the book of Judges, to its opening chapters that tell how not all the land had been possessed. That opening follows sometime after the death of Joshua and covers the experiences of God's people between Joshua's death and the raising up of Samuel, a period of about 350 to 450 years. It shows Israel's failure to carry out the instructions God gave, so that not all the land had been possessed.

It is a story of ups and downs, with constant backsliding from God and repeated captivity to surrounding enemies and consequent captivity. It shows the help that came to Israel through the judges, or saviours, whom the Lord raised up on their behalf. It shows that God uses very unpromising material, yet always the best at hand.
