Judges 11:19

And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said unto him, Let us pass, we pray thee, through thy land into my place.

The verse stands in the history of Jephthah, whom God raised up as a deliverer for Israel while the people were suffering under their enemies. His work belonged to the period of the earlier judges, when divine deliverance answered prolonged national distress. In that deliverance Jephthah made war against the Ammonites and broke their power after eighteen years of oppression.
