So Jephthah passed over unto the children of Ammon to fight against them; and the LORD delivered them into his hands.
Israel had humbled itself before God, put away its strange gods, and returned to serving the Lord. It was in that setting of repentance and renewed loyalty that deliverance came. God raised up Jephthah to go over and fight against the Ammonites.
The Lord delivered the Ammonites into Jephthah's hands. That victory broke their power over Israel and ended eighteen years of oppression.
