God brought deliverance to Israel through Jephthah, defeating the Ammonites with a very great slaughter and subduing them before Israel after eighteen years of oppression that had broken down their power. The victory crushed the enemy's dominion and ended their long ascendancy over God's people. It followed Israel's repentance in putting away its idols and returning to serve the Lord alone. The Lord heard their prayers and began to act on their behalf, and this divine working brought about the deliverance.
