Judges 11:5 stands in the history of Jephthah's rising to deliver Israel when the Ammonites were oppressing them. The oppression that drove the elders of Gilead to seek him in the land of Tob was the suffering that opened the way for his work as deliverer. Under his leadership war was carried to the Ammonites until their power over Israel was broken. That deliverance came after Israel put away their foreign gods and turned back to serve the Lord. Yet the lesson taught by suffering did not hold, for they soon forgot it and returned to their former course.
