Judges 11:9
And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, If ye bring me home again to fight against the children of Ammon, and the LORD deliver them before me, shall I be your head? And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, If ye bring me home again to fight against the children of Ammon, and the LORD deliver them before me, shall I be your head?
Israel had put away its foreign gods and returned to serving the Lord, and God then raised up Jephthah as a deliverer for the nation. The inquiry in Judges 11:9 belongs to that account, made when Jephthah bargained with the elders of Gilead over becoming their head if brought back to fight the Ammonites. He went on to wage war against the Ammonites and broke their power over Israel.
