The mention of forty sons and thirty grandsons riding on seventy young donkeys during an eight-year judgeship belongs to the history of Israel's judges. That history covers a time of unsatisfactory leadership, when the people were brought into subjection to heathen powers and the country suffered damage. Repentance was delayed, and when it came the deliverance granted was only partial. Even that limited deliverance came through God's mercy.
