Judges 12:4

Then Jephthah gathered together all the men of Gilead, and fought with Ephraim: and the men of Gilead smote Ephraim, because they said, Ye Gileadites are fugitives of Ephraim among the Ephraimites, and among the Manassites.

Jephthah gathered together all the men of Gilead and fought with Ephraim on behalf of his own people. This conflict took place amid the troubled conditions prevailing in Israel at that time. The victory over Ephraim brought only a partial deliverance to the people. Even that limited deliverance came through God's mercy.
