Judges 13:17

And Manoah said unto the angel of the LORD, What is thy name, that when thy sayings come to pass we may do thee honour?

The verse stands within the calling of Samson, when Manoah and his wife were given instruction concerning the son who was to be born and set apart as consecrated to God. In it Manoah asks the angel of the Lord to tell his name, so that when his words come to pass they may give him honor. The setting reveals that God designed Samson for a great work on behalf of Israel and surrounded him with favorable conditions for his growth and preparation. That purpose was afterward lost through Samson's surrender to passion, which brought upon him shame and disaster and ended in death. The record to which the verse belongs is an instance of God's employment of angels as messengers to communicate with human beings.
