The Angel Ascends in the Flame Before Manoahby emmanuel_higgins

Judges 13:20

For it came to pass, when the flame went up toward heaven from off the altar, that the angel of the LORD ascended in the flame of the altar. And Manoah and his wife looked on it, and fell on their faces to the ground.

The moment captured is the ascent of the angel of the LORD in the flame rising heavenward from the altar, while Manoah and his wife watch and fall with their faces to the ground. The visitation came to the household of Manoah of the tribe of Dan at Zorah, on the border of the hill country overlooking the Philistine plain. It occurred amid widespread apostasy in the early years of Philistine oppression, when that household was among the few that remained true to Jehovah.

The Angel first appeared to Manoah's childless wife with the promise of a son, then appeared again in answer to Manoah's prayer for instruction about how the child should be raised. The instruction required the mother to abstain from wine and strong drink and from anything coming from the vine and from any unclean thing, required that same abstinence to be imposed upon the child from the first, and set the child apart to God as a Nazarite from birth with uncut hair. God designed Samson to accomplish a great work for Israel, to begin to deliver Israel and humble the Philistines, and therefore from the very outset of life the utmost care was taken to surround him with the most favorable conditions for physical strength, intellectual vigor, and moral purity.

The chapter stands as an example of God using angels to communicate with human beings and to assist His chosen messengers.
