Samson Speaks with His Parents Among Vineyardsby CBPepper

Judges 14:2

And he came up, and told his father and his mother, and said, I have seen a woman in Timnath of the daughters of the Philistines: now therefore get her for me to wife.

Samson saw a woman in Timnath of the daughters of the Philistines and came and told his father and his mother to get her for him to wife, because she pleased him well. His parents were God-fearing, and they endeavored to dissuade him from this marriage choice.

By taking this step he joined himself to the enemies of Israel, entering into ungodly company and placing himself where he was exposed to temptation. The decision was not made by reliance upon God and control of passion in faithfulness to God and to the divine mission entrusted to him, but by self-pleasing and by giving free rein to unrestrained passion. It began a self-pleasing course that led onward to shame and disaster and death.
