Judges 16:27
Now the house was full of men and women; and all the lords of the Philistines were there; and there were upon the roof about three thousand men and women, that beheld while Samson made sport. Now the house was full of men and women; and all the lords of the Philistines were there; and there were upon the roof about three thousand men and women, that beheld while Samson made sport.
Judges 16:27 belongs to the account of Samson's downfall, when the course he had chosen reached its end in shame, disaster, and death. He had given free rein to passion instead of relying on God, and the gathering in the Philistine house displays the fruit of that choice. What is seen there is not a triumph of strength but a man made a spectacle for his enemies because he surrendered moral control.
His great physical strength had not made him strong in self-control, integrity, or firmness. The lack of inward government left his outward power unable to save him from humiliation and ruin. The lesson is that true strength lies in dependence on God and mastery of passion, without which bodily might only hastens disaster.
