Judges 18:11
And there went from thence of the family of the Danites, out of Zorah and out of Eshtaol, six hundred men appointed with weapons of war. And there went from thence of the family of the Danites, out of Zorah and out of Eshtaol, six hundred men appointed with weapons of war.
Judges 18:11 belongs to chapters 17-21, the closing episodes outside the stories of the twelve judges, one of which is the building of the sanctuary at Dan. The main narrative of the book ends with chapter 16, and these closing chapters record events from the early part of the judges period. The verse records that six hundred men of the Danites, appointed with weapons of war, set out from Zorah and out of Eshtaol on the tribe's second journey north to take possession of a new home at Laish.
On the way, when they reached Micah's house, the armed warriors stood outside while their companions took Micah's images and idols and persuaded his hired Levite priest to go with them. They then captured and destroyed Laish, renamed it Dan, and established idolatrous worship there. That sanctuary at Dan continued until the ten tribes went into captivity.
The verse is part of the record of Israel's backsliding and the disgrace and punishment that followed. It belongs to the account of disorder and grave immorality in chapters 18 and 19, from a time when people did what seemed right to themselves rather than following God's standard. The early apostasy of Dan shown in this chapter is offered as one possible reason Dan is omitted from the tribes numbered among the sealed in Revelation 7:1-8. The idolatrous worship already established at Dan made it easier for Jeroboam later to set up the golden calf at Dan.
