Judges 2:13

And they forsook the LORD, and served Baal and Ashtaroth.

Judges 2:13 records that Israel forsook the Lord and served Baal and Ashtaroth. This was done by a new generation that arose after the faithful generation had died. The apostasy followed a genuine revival and repentance, but evil later sown bore fruit as worship became mixed with false principles and pride.

Forsaking the Lord in this way was breaking the covenant and departing from allegiance to God. That breach of allegiance brought divine judgment, disaster and defeat upon Israel. The nations left in the land became a test of whether Israel would keep the Lord's way.

The apostasy shows that following human feeling and reasoning rather than God's wisdom, and associating with the ungodly, can lead to complete separation from God. When God's people exalt a power or principle opposed to Him, they bring disaster and defeat upon themselves.
