Judges 2:7
And the people served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works of the LORD, that he did for Israel. And the people served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works of the LORD, that he did for Israel.
Judges 2:7 records a revival time, a season of faithfulness following genuine revival and reformation. That faithfulness came after genuine repentance marked by penitential tears, contrition of soul, confession, and sacrifices pointing to the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ at Bochim, where the sins were forgiven and a covenant was made. Having repented, the people kept the covenant they had made and served the Lord all the days of Joshua and all the days of the elders and rulers who outlived him and had seen all God's great works for Israel.
They remained faithful during those days because Joshua and the elders with him were steadfast sentinels for right and for God's honor, with Joshua living a life of steadfast integrity. Although the sin was repented of and forgiven, the disobedience still sowed perverted precept and example as a seed of evil in human minds to bear a harmful harvest of fruit later, gave enemies advantages, and left unconsecrated actions that would be a snare. When Joshua died and one by one the faithful sentinels who had crossed the Jordan died, a new generation arose that departed from God, mingling worship with erroneous principles and ambitious pride.
After those leaders died, God raised up righteous kings, and the history of the nation runs from Joshua to David, from Rehoboam to the captivity, and from age to age until the Son of God came to call Israel to allegiance, while the people were determined to have their own way and went to every length in scheme after scheme to carry out their own wicked purposes. The verse is to be read carefully and with an understanding heart by all who profess faith, by all who name the name of Christ, as they search their own hearts whether they are in the faith.
