Judges 2:9

And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnath-heres, in the mount of Ephraim, on the north side of the hill Gaash.

Judges 2:9 marks the death and burial of Joshua together with the elders and rulers of his generation. Those men had stood through life as steadfast sentinels for what was right and for the honor of God. Their burial therefore closes the era of that faithful guardianship over Israel. After they died God raised up righteous kings, so that the history of the nation runs unbroken from Joshua to David, from Rehoboam to the captivity, and from age to age until the Son of God came into the world to call Israel to allegiance.

With those faithful sentinels gone, the people were determined to have their own way. They instituted scheme after scheme to secure their own ends and went to any length to carry out wicked purposes. That self-willed course was fulfilled at last in the Jews' treatment of Christ.
