Judges 21:12

And they found among the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead four hundred young virgins, that had known no man by lying with any male: and they brought them unto the camp to Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.

Judges 21:12 stands in chapters 17-21, which are set at the end of the book although they recount what happened in the early part of the period of the judges, while the main narrative properly closes with chapter 16. Those final chapters are supplementary to the central history rather than its continuation in time.

They contain the account of the outrage committed at Gibeah and of how the tribe of Benjamin made common cause with the offenders among its own people. Together they form a sorrowful closing record that exposes apostasy and the disgrace and chastisement that followed it. In that record customary claims of hospitality were exalted above the honor of womanhood, and clannish devotion to a tribe was exalted above the duty of executing justice. That same wrong persists in later times, and it finds no excuse.
