Judges 21:17
And they said, There must be an inheritance for them that be escaped of Benjamin, that a tribe be not destroyed out of Israel. And they said, There must be an inheritance for them that be escaped of Benjamin, that a tribe be not destroyed out of Israel.
The verse stands in chapters 17-21, whose events occurred in the early part of the history of the judges, while the real story of the book ends with chapter 16. More specifically, it belongs to one of the book's two concluding chapters, which record the crime of the people of Gibeah and the tribe of Benjamin's identification with them. Those closing chapters are a pitiful record of backsliding followed by disgrace and punishment.
In them conventional hospitality was placed higher than female virtue and clannish loyalty to a tribe was placed higher than rendering justice. That same condition is still seen today, yet it never leaves any excuse for sin.
