Judges 3:9
And when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised up a deliverer to the children of Israel, who delivered them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother. And when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised up a deliverer to the children of Israel, who delivered them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother.
Israel had forgotten God in prosperity, and as a consequence was subdued by the king of Mesopotamia and held in severe bondage for eight years. Their distress exposed the helplessness of their idolatrous connections to aid them, and remembering the wonderful works of God they cried unto Him in repentance for sin. In great mercy the Lord raised up Othniel, Caleb's younger brother, as deliverer, and when designated as the man God had chosen to lead and deliver Israel he did not refuse the responsibility.
The Spirit of the Lord rested upon him, and in the strength of God he judged Israel, repressed idolatry, administered justice, and elevated the standard of morality and religion. He went out to war, and the Lord delivered the king of Mesopotamia into his hand. That deliverance brought forty years of rule by Othniel during which the people remained faithful to the divine law and enjoyed peace and prosperity, until after his death they relapsed into idolatry.
