Gideon Standing Before an Israelite Campby emmanuel_higgins

Judges 6:35

And he sent messengers throughout all Manasseh; who also was gathered after him: and he sent messengers unto Asher, and unto Zebulun, and unto Naphtali; and they came up to meet them.

This verse belongs to the history in Judges 6-8 of Israel's deliverance from Midianite oppression. Its setting is Israel's renewed sin, seven years of suffering, the people's confession of their sins, and God raising up a helper. In the verse Gideon, after sounding the trumpet at the Spirit's prompting, sent messengers throughout Manasseh and to Asher, and unto Zebulun, and unto Naphtali. The people of those tribes cheerfully answered his call and gathered to meet them for Israel's deliverance.

In this history God did not utterly forsake Israel when sin separated them from Him and removed His strength from them, for while a remnant stayed true to Jehovah He raised up faithful and valiant men to put down idolatry and deliver the Israelites from their enemies. Yet when the deliverer died the people returned to their idols, so the round of backsliding and chastisement followed by confession and deliverance was repeated again and again.
