Gideon Wringing Water From the Fleeceby sanjalberts

Judges 6:38

And it was so: for he rose up early on the morrow, and thrust the fleece together, and wringed the dew out of the fleece, a bowl full of water.

The verse belongs to the time when God raised up Gideon to deliver Israel from its enemies after the people had turned back to idolatry. It records the first fleece sign, in which in the morning the fleece was wet with dew so that a bowlful of water could be wrung from it while the surrounding ground remained dry. Gideon had requested the sign for assurance that God had called him to deliver Israel and would save Israel through him.

Gideon feared the first test was not decisive because wool naturally absorbs moisture, so he felt he needed a renewed sign. He then asked for the opposite sign, and God granted that request as well. Gideon's use of the fleece to learn God's will does not authorize setting signs as tests for deciding duty; that practice is a delusion contrary to the Lord's will, and confidence in such signs can lead to serious wrongdoing, including adultery.
