Judges 6:8

That the LORD sent a prophet unto the children of Israel, which said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you forth out of the house of bondage;

The seven years of Midianite oppression came after Israel forsook the Lord God of their fathers for idols, so that they were brought into subjection to nations they might have subdued. God sent a prophet to remind Israel that the Lord God of Israel had brought them up from Egypt and brought them forth out of the house of bondage. That message also recalled God's command not to fear the gods of the Amorites and then rebuked Israel for disobeying Him, and it was proclaimed throughout the land.

Israel's distress under Midian led the people to heed the Lord's reproof and confess their sins, after which God sent the prophet. In their distress the people gave heed to and accepted that prophetic reproof, confessing their sins and asking God for mercy. They wanted relief from oppression but had not truly repented, yet after that confession God again raised up a helper to deliver them, repeating the cycle of backsliding and chastisement followed by confession and deliverance.
