Judges 7:11
And thou shalt hear what they say; and afterward shall thine hands be strengthened to go down unto the host. Then went he down with Phurah his servant unto the outside of the armed men that were in the host. And thou shalt hear what they say; and afterward shall thine hands be strengthened to go down unto the host. Then went he down with Phurah his servant unto the outside of the armed men that were in the host.
The verse stands in the story of God raising up Gideon to deliver Israel from Midianite oppression after the people confessed their sins. God directed Gideon to go with his servant Phurah to the outside edge of the armed men in the hostile camp and listen to what they said, with the promise that hearing them would strengthen his courage and resolve to go down against the host. What Gideon heard there was a dream and its interpretation declaring that God had delivered Midian into his hand, which gave him courage to return and lead the attack.
Gideon's army prevailed not because of its numbers but because in living faith it followed God's special directions. The deliverance was arranged to be recognized as God's power and success, accomplished through humble instruments and simple means, so that it exalts the Lord and is not credited to human wisdom, strength, or talent. Success depends on God's help working together with human effort, so trust in God and obedience to His commands are essential in spiritual conflict. God's workers must not be faithless and narrow in outlook nor make narrow plans, because narrow plans accomplish very little. They must not trust in themselves or seek glory for themselves.
