Judges 8:18

Then said he unto Zebah and Zalmunna, What manner of men were they whom ye slew at Tabor? And they answered, As thou art, so were they; each one resembled the children of a king.

The inquiry concerning the men put to death at Tabor forms part of the history of Gideon’s rescue of Israel from its foes. That history unfolds amid Israel’s recurring round of turning to idols, falling under oppression, and then being set free. In each such crisis God lifted up a rescuer to break the yoke of the oppressor. Gideon stands in that history as the loyal and courageous deliverer raised up for Israel’s release.
