Gideon Refuses the Gold Earringsby emmanuel_higgins

Judges 8:26

And the weight of the golden earrings that he requested was a thousand and seven hundred shekels of gold; beside ornaments, and collars, and purple raiment that was on the kings of Midian, and beside the chains that were about their camels’ necks.

The golden earrings Gideon requested weighed a thousand and seven hundred shekels. Besides those earrings the account lists ornaments and collars, and purple clothing that had been on the kings of Midian, and chains that had been about their camels' necks. The earrings and the other costly things were supplied by Israel after Gideon asked for the earrings as his share of the spoil. The amount shows the great quantity and value of the spoil collected.

Beyond the items named in the verse, other costly materials were also given for what Gideon made. The collection was used to make an ephod and breastplate modeled on the high priest's garments. He intended them for a local worship service as an unauthorized substitute for the people's journeys to Shiloh.
