Judges 8:5
And he said unto the men of Succoth, Give, I pray you, loaves of bread unto the people that follow me; for they be faint, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna, kings of Midian. And he said unto the men of Succoth, Give, I pray you, loaves of bread unto the people that follow me; for they be faint, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna, kings of Midian.
Gideon and his faint, exhausted followers, while pursuing Zebah and Zalmunna, kings of Midian, asked the men of Succoth to give loaves of bread to the people following him. The request for bread was made for his exhausted men in the course of his pursuit of the Midianite kings. It took place during the continued pursuit after the rout of the Midianite army.
The verse belongs to the account of Midian's oppression of Israel and Gideon's deliverance of the people from Midian. It is part of Israel's deliverance from Midian through Gideon. It is part of the repeated pattern in which God raised up a faithful, valiant deliverer to rescue Israel from its enemies. The deliverance in which the verse occurs was raised up after Israel confessed its sins.
