Judges 8:7

And Gideon said, Therefore when the LORD hath delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into mine hand, then I will tear your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers.

This warning belongs to the history of Midian's oppression of Israel and Gideon's deliverance of his people. It belongs specifically to Gideon's pursuit beyond the Jordan with his three hundred men, faint yet still pursuing, while the Midianites fled toward the Jordan to reach their own territory beyond the river.

While Ephraim was roused to intercept fugitives at the southern fords, Gideon crossed the stream after those already over and overtook Zebah and Zalmunna, who were over the entire host and had escaped with fifteen thousand men. He scattered their force completely and captured and slew the leaders, with not less than one hundred and twenty thousand invaders perishing in the defeat. The victory broke the power of Midian so they were never again able to make war upon Israel, and the surrounding nations learned that Israel's God had fought for His people.
